Women Weavers OnLine

N'kob

These are the Oukrim sisters, skilled and productive weavers who made the rugs below and also some on previous pages. Sometimes two work on a rug and sometimes all three of them. Khadija is the eldest and divorced, and Fatima is the youngest, who I think is in the center. They give the money from the rugs to their father, who uses it for household expenses. In fact, when I asked them what they had done with the money from a previous rug they sold on this site, their brother nearby patted their father on the stomach!

Piece 3.12744 is a small pile rug with three central panels. The ends have a nice rich blue background, and the center is red tending toward maroon. The background of the outer border is a dark blue, almost navy. In it and the inner border, some red has run onto the white. It is not extreme, but you can see it if you compare the top and bottom borders here and also on the close-up. Some will just feel it softens the contrast, but I like to let clients know about any possible shortcomings. This piece measures about 2'1" x 3'10" and costs $125.

Piece 3.12746 is a pile rug with the lattice design, and it is unususal in three ways. As you have seen above, the lattice is usually done in gray and white, but here those colors alternate with dark red and white. A second difference is that the background is usually black, but here it is a very dark blue. (It looks black on my sceen, but my notes say it's dark blue. You can see a contrast in the black border and the center.) Third, usually the lattice covers the whole rug except for borders, but this rug has a design in the center. In addition to the red and blue, there are accents in orange and a small bit of dark green in the border. You can see them in this detail. The size of this piece is 2'4" x 5'3" and the price is $230.

Piece 3.12748 is a small pile rug in a lattice design in the traditional gray and white on a black background. The border has more color to it, with a rich red, white and orange design on a gray-blue background. You can see a detail here. This measures about 2'1" x 3'8" and costs $125.

Piece 3.12750 is a medium pile rug in the Tazenakht style. There are the three central panels, here separated by bands in a rich blue-red. The end panels are on a dark navy blue base and there are accents in bright orange and white. The rug has a complex set of borders which you can see better on the close-up. It does not lie totally flat right now, but will probably flatten out with use. The size is about 3'7" x 7'4" and the price is $555.
