Several
of you have written to me and said that it must be really interesting to work
with Moroccan women the way I do - and you're right! I feel really
lucky to lead tours like those offered below, since they let me share some of
my experiences and friends with people that usually would not have such an
opportunity. You get to see the “real Morocco” more than any other tour I
know, and I’ve led tours for some famous travel organizations. We meet urban and rural people, artisans,
experts and social activists, visiting with them in their homes, offices or
co-operatives. And of course we see the main sights, and you have a chance to
shop. The tours are never exactly the
same (and others can be arranged for special groups), and reading through the
linked descriptions will give you an idea of the things we will do this
year.
There are two trips each year, one for 15 days giving a full tour of this
exotic and welcoming country - from the Altantic to
the magical Sahara, Atlas Mountains and fertile plains, with visits to
weavers, families and more, plus seeing the major sites and cities. The second, shorter, 10 day trip is more
focused on textiles, and spends more time in Fes and Marrakech, with an
optional extension to Essaouira.
If you’d like
to be on my mailing list and be notified next time I do a tour, send me an
email at sdavis@uslink.net
To tell you a little about myself, I’m a social scientist and have done
extensive research and development work in North Africa for agencies including
the World Bank, FAO, USAID and the Peace Corps. The research has focused on
gender and adolescence, about which I’ve written two books: Adolescence in a Moroccan Town, and Patience and Power: Women’s Lives in a
Moroccan Village. I have held
teaching or research positions at Haverford College, the University of
Pennsylvania, Rutgers University and Al Akhawayn
University in Morocco. I have a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of
Michigan and did post-doctoral work at Harvard.
My travel
colleague Joan Noble adds “She is a vivacious, witty leader who has lived and
worked in Morocco for many years, fluent in the Arabic and French spoken there.
She will open the doors into this fascinating society for us to meet many of
her friends and colleagues.”
